Seconds later, Trixie stepped gingerly
onto the platform floor of Bobby’s new treehouse, all the while
wondering how much experience Regan had with building work and
whether, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, he had a reckless
streak that would allow him to actually do this for her brother, who
could get into trouble all by himself in an empty room, an
unfortunate trait which she herself shared.

Trixie ran down the hill, hurrying home
from cleaning the clubhouse, but stopped short at the base of the
enormous old tree at the edge of their yard and looked up as
something unusual caught her attention, eyes widening to see her
almost-twin, dangling by his knees from one of the lower branches and
holding a banana, while two branches higher Bobby did the same and
said hopefully, “Ook, ook.”

One minute,
ten-year-old Mart was soaring from the banister, performing the most
daring of flips, his safe landing assured by the enormous pile of
pillows he had amassed, by stealing them from every room in the
house; the next thing he knew, he awoke in hospital, one of his eyes
was bruised and swollen almost shut, his head hurt and he wore two
bandages on the side of his face.
